Carpools and rides were the only way I could make it work as a swimmer whose parents hated early mornings/couldn’t do all that driving due to their work schedules. It seems like fewer people do carpools nowadays and I’m not sure why.

Don't put it on another teen or parent to drive your child. And, for safety reasons its not good to have a new driver drive other teens.

Well here’s the answer. No one trusts each other anymore. Great for the environment for everyone to be driving their own children everywhere and for parents to be so unable to give up an ounce of control. What age is no longer a new driver to you? I guess an 18 yr old senior who is goal oriented enough to be doing morning swim practice is too risky for you? Will you let your child get in the car with any friends or just keep helicoptering throughout high school?

And to your point about making another parent drive your kid… it’s called a carpool. They do some and you do some. Use your brain.

Not what you asked, but please reconsider. Teens that age need 8-10 hours of sleep a night. Unless your child can routinely fall asleep before 8:00 at night, they aren’t going to be able to get that and will go through some of the most critical years of their life sleep deprived.

I did this for swimming as a teenager and it was a horrible mistake. The chronic sleep deprivation affected my mental health and academic performance in ways that still hurt me now as an adult, even though at the time I appeared to be doing great.

Its genetic--either you are born with the right gene for this or not. No one in our family could do it. With that being said if you have this gene you are probably more inclined for success in life everything else being equal.

Hope it works for you Op. Clearly it works for some. As a family we do not permit participation in swim team due to the schedule.

We started them this summer. Kid was fine with it. It sucked for us. It really depends on the people.

AM practices suck. My kids tried and it's a fight to get out the door. We stopped. They were lagging at the end of the day. Couldn't do their homework without a nap. It messed up their days and mine too. Mid-afternoon and I am a basket case. They just do the PM practices.

AM swim practices are too early for me. I give the kids my Uber app and sleep in.

A lot of people say that once they are over the shock, it’s actually easier to do practice, school, homework, dinner, bed. Less frantic in the evenings.

That said, can you find a carpool so it’s less often you up and driving that early?

My kid will be starting with a training group in the fall that has 2 morning practices during the school week. Her friends that are a year older and started it last year said it was fine and they actually enjoyed having a few days where they didn’t have after school obligations.

How late in the evening are your other DCs practices? Obviously getting into a schedule and routine that has an earlier dinner and earlier bedtime for your 15 year old is key.

My kid wants to do AM practices because that is the expectation for age group and level, friends are doing it, and DC wants to do it.

Why do you have to do AM? Are there no evening practice times? Is your child involved in another sport? When does school start/end? All considerations you need to figure in. If your kid is busy in the evenings it’s going to be very hard.

I’m a single parent.

This year is DC15 first year doing AM swim practices at 4:30 AM.

I also have another DC12 doing PM practices 3 days a week.

Thankfully I work from home and the pool is a 10 minute drive from our house.

Tips please! I know we will all need to get into a pretty strict routine. I know it’s gonna suck, but we gotta do it.
