We went straight to a twin bed with one of those bumper guardrails. Best decision.

Toddler Beds are a huge marketing ploy. You don’t need one unless space is a concern.
You can do rails on a twin, or a pool noodle under the fitted sheet.

Most cribs are made to convert to a toddler bed and the conversion kit usually comes with the crib. You can never have too much space, and you will miss it once you put that twin bed in. I say go with the toddler bed and enjoy the space, unless you bought a crib that cannot convert.

We started with just a twin mattress on the floor. . No worries about falling. Later we added the box spring. Toddler beds are a waste.

Twin or full bed

We went straight to a regular full size bed and it was great. I really loved (and still love) having that space for snuggling, reading books, or watching/caring for DD when she is sick.

We used foam bumpers that go under the sheet until she was 5. Probably could have gotten rid of them sooner, but she was attached to them. But that was it and it was a very easy transition. I wouldn't recommend a toddler bed unless you have a crib that converts to one and they are very attached to the crib by the time the are potty training. But I wouldn't buy a separate toddler bed.

This. Go straight for the regular bed w/ temp guard rail or pool noodle under the fitted sheet.

It depends on your space. I knew we would eventually want bunk beds, but my oldest wasn't quite ready for a top bunk when my youngest began climbing out of his crib. The room didn't really fit 2 twins, so for us a toddler bed was worth it. We didn't do the crib conversion, we found a super cheap toddler bed at a garage sale and used the crib mattress.

But my oldest went straight to a twin.

We already had an appointment with extra full size bed, so that’s what we did.

OP: Awesome. That was my gut. Great to have one less thing to by/one less transition to make.

Move them to a regular bed. We did the toddler bed and he was out of it in a year. Not worth it.

My son is 2.5 and has been excellent at crib sleeping for awhile and don't immediate plans to move him but WHEN we do, what do you all suggest? Moving to a toddler bed or going straight to a twin/full/queen? I hadn't realized that we would have to buy a toddler conversion kit so just wondering if it's worth it to go that route or go straight to a regular bed
