I know several people whose parents are in one of these. They give the money and get it back at the end (or the family does). A specific one I know of transitioned the wife from an independent living situation to assisted to memory care until she died. The husband is still in independent living. Yes, I believe all meals and activities were included.

It's time. I'm starting to look into CCRCs for my parents because I can see that at some point in the semi-near future my dad will have to transition from independent living to assisted living, possibly with memory care. I like the idea of starting them off at a place with independent living options and then increasing care as needed but staying in the same community.

I see several places in MoCo have (very high) entrance fees that are X% refundable. Then there is the monthly fee. I have never heard of pricing structures like this before, but google is telling me it's common - especially for higher end places.

My parents can't afford more than 5-10 years at those rates depending on how fast they slide from independent to assisted living. Are these places for people who are so wealthy they don't have to worry if they live 20 more years? I will keep looking for more affordable options in our area, but I thought I would also post here and ask people for practical advice/experience with CCRCs.

When you transition from independent living to assisted, does the entrance fee also transfer? Or do you get your X% back and then have to pay the new entrance fee for assisted? Specifically I could see my dad moving to assisted while my mom stayed independent.

If all the money is spent on my dad, does that mean my mom will end up kicked out of the CCRC and we will have to find her medicaid care? This last question isn't specific to CCRCs but is a concern I have since she is in better condition and my dad is almost definitely going to need memory care for some amount of time.

I know this will be specific to the CCRC, but should I expect meals to be part of the monthly fee? That would make them MUCH more reasonable if so. Are activities usually included? Or do you end up being nickel-dimed for all these little things in addition to the monthly fee? I guess what I'm getting at is that all these communities sound the same when you look them up online. What are the real questions I should be asking now that I am starting to shop around? TIA.
