If this is the question that comes up as a result of the conversation about having another child then the answer is vacation home. Because one partner doesn't want another child and they are laying it out in financial terms to the partner that does. Don't bring a child into this.

I can't afford either. On purely theoretical grounds I'd pick one more kid because I would love another baby and my kids say they want another sibling. On more practical grounds, DH has always, unwaveringly said he wanted to stop at two, he has never shown any hint of changing his mind, so if we had more money I think we'd go for a second home in the mountains or on a Finger Lake. Or just a bigger travel budget- I'd rather spend the same amount to go *different* places.

I can not imagine this being an either / or, unless
- family wants a vacation home but not interested in restating all the baby stuff (gear, baby-proofing, etc )
- family needs more room and the question is about adding onto primary home vs. buying a second home

If a family has enough money to buy a vacation home, and already has a kid - adding one more kid (+ expenses) isn’t a fraction of what an additional home costs.

I really don't want a vacation house. It seems like a lot of work, and I really like going a new place each year.

Does that mean I have to take a 4th child? I do love babies, but I'm not really in a position where having one makes sense.

Not the exact question but we stopped at two because that was the number we could comfortably manage without needing to make any changes to our lifestyle. I would rather have two and a comfortable life.
