I think they can only see the negatives and have a lot of fear. Like a friend had never hailed a cab OR taken an Uber and was afraid to do both. Didn't know how to use a city bus, was afraid of mass transit underground. Thought all homeless people were inherently dangerous. Also thought a lot of people were homeless when they were just poor. Kept asking me where everyone was going. Couldn't sleep at night due to city noises I barely noticed.

Funnily one of my friends from a small town is a huge extrovert and found the city too overstimulating while I'm an introvert and don't.

I go back to visit for the beautiful scenery, peace and quiet, and people that I love. I continue to live in the city for not needing to drive, having good healthcare, and being around culture and lots of people.

To me the worst case scenario would be moving to the suburbs which has the benefits of neither country or city and a lot of the downsides of both combined into one.

I think the people in the small midwestern city I am from picture NYC as a place where if you go out onto the street you will see lots of people who are just walking around mugging everyone they can. Like they think this is going on on every block, every day, 24/7.

Some do, some don't. It's the same as almost anything. Do people in cities hate small towns? Some do, a lot don't.
