My girls have gotten between $15-20/hr depending on how many kids, length of time, and if they are sleeping.

Under age 19 and working less than 20 hours/week is exempt from minimum wage. Not that it really matters for a teen babysitter.

"on the books" means that he pays taxes, and kids typically don't make enough to pay taxes, so it doesn't matter if he is on or off the books.

I don't understand why the pp's kid would demand more money to babysit then he makes at his summer job, though.

We are in Bethesda. DD would like to start babysitting. She's had some experience this summer as a CIT and loves working with toddlers/preschool-age kids. What is a reasonable hourly rate? There would only be 1 child involved, age 2 or 3.
