Bomb: The Race to Build--And Steal--The World's Most Dangerous Weapon by Steve Sheinkin is absolutely amazing. It's for a middle grade audience but it's written wonderfully and in a very compelling way.

I have always been fascinated by the decision to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki, so I would love to read a procedural “tick-tock” about how the decision was made. What did they consider, what were the reservations, how much did they do to warn the Japanese and avoid bombing?

HOWEVER, I cannot stand war histories. My brain shuts off as soon as I see “General X advanced 10,000 troops to the front, attempting to split the blockade leaving 2,000 artillery and 7,009 infantry in garrison position blah blah blah blah.” Can’t anybody write about war but ONLY focus on the people and the drama? There is so much human pathos in this moment in history, so hasn’t someone told THAT story?
