Besides, it was dropped a few decades ago from the Episcopalian and maybe other hymnals because of concern it might be misinterpreted.

No, I've only seen this flag in fairly liberal Protestant churches, but assumed it was a holdover from the 1940s or 1950s.
Have never seen anyone flying it in front of their house though. Could be person be a Protestant minister?

I've seen it in all kinds of church contexts, but mainliners definitely use it. Not Christian nationalist at all, but I agree that I don't see the point. Most often it's paired with an American flag which I don't like in church generally, so I'd rather have neither and just use the many Christian symbols that existed before that flag was developed.

I associate that flag with extremely mainline Protestant denominations, not the fringe evangelical denominations that tend to make up the bulk of Christian nationalist movements. That said, someone flying it on their house would be a bit of a head scratcher. Can you just ask them what it's about? Maybe one of their kids just became a minister or something.
