Ha, this made me laugh. My "terrible" parents took me to see Ruthless People (rated R) and all sorts of PG-13 and R movies when I was 9 yrs old but that was the eighties I guess. Barbie doesn't have anything super inappropriate in it, but kids younger than maybe 12 or 13 really won't get the messages about patriarchy and the unattainable expectations placed on women in our society. Yes, Barbie is slapped on the butt by a dude in LA and she makes a reference to not having genitals and there are references to Ken sleeping at Barbie's house, but actually Barbie's reactions to each of those incidents (maybe not the butt slap) are very kid-like, so kids might find it amusing and not actually get the humor in it. I'm considering taking my 9 year old son because he seems interested in it and I want him to see a movie with a positive female message.
