PG means parental guidance suggested for children under 13. How do you know the parents of these 11 year olds did not provide guidance beforehand?

The adult stuff goes right over their heads. There was a youngish girl, around 8, next to me who, after the the word "fascist" was mentioned asked her mom "what's that?" My daughter, almost 10, and I discussed it after the fact when I asked her if she knew what "patriarchy" meant and we talked about it since it was new to her. There were other girls even younger who clearly seemed bored and were walking around, using the rest room a lot, etc. There is a whole lot in the middle that isn't geared towards them.

Ha, this made me laugh. My "terrible" parents took me to see Ruthless People (rated R) and all sorts of PG-13 and R movies when I was 9 yrs old but that was the eighties I guess. Barbie doesn't have anything super inappropriate in it, but kids younger than maybe 12 or 13 really won't get the messages about patriarchy and the unattainable expectations placed on women in our society. Yes, Barbie is slapped on the butt by a dude in LA and she makes a reference to not having genitals and there are references to Ken sleeping at Barbie's house, but actually Barbie's reactions to each of those incidents (maybe not the butt slap) are very kid-like, so kids might find it amusing and not actually get the humor in it. I'm considering taking my 9 year old son because he seems interested in it and I want him to see a movie with a positive female message.

It's not a kids movie. There is some innuendo, but imho it's mild and your kid either won't get it or it won't faze them. There really isn't anything innappropriate.

But it's not a kids Barbie movie. They will be bored halfway. It's an adult women movie.

(PP here again - there aren’t mature scenes, in my opinion - but there are all kinds of references to mature topics (genitals used for what? The idea that people should go home together when they are dating. Thoughts of death? Body image stuff. Depression… there was more - nothing that my daughter was baffled by enough to ask me outright.) I wasn’t totally comfortable with exposing her to all that, but I do think it went over her head. She was happy enough with the movie.

My 9 year old watched the trailer and decided for herself that it wasn’t for kids. She loves the Barbie movies on Netflix (which are for kids) so pretty sure she was comparing it to that.

I took my 8yo. I warned her ahead of time that this movie is aimed at adults in some places and we could talk about anything that was confusing. She didn’t seem bored, but I doubt she got many of the finer points. She explained to her dad that Ken had caused a lot of problems.

I think it’s not inappropriate, but parts of it may go over her head and/or be boring. My DD loved the experience of going and a lot of the first half of the movie but I could tell she was bored for some of the second half.

Is it appropriate for a 9 year old DD?
