Better how?

Running AC more does not save electricity, but does make it easier to reach a target temperature more quickly.

We have an old house with upstairs far warmer than downstairs. For my daughter's bedroom, we bought her a room A/C unit she can use to decrease her room's temperature before bed. The rest of us don't mind sleeping at 77-79F, depending on how hot and sunny it's been outside (thermostat is downstairs and set at 76).

It really depends on your insulation. We keep our upstairs at 79/80 during the day, but keep all the blinds closed. It rarely turns on during the day, and then takes about an hour to drop to 77 when we get home.

Does it run straight for hours? Or on/off for hours? The latter is normal.

I run my AC 77 in day, 74 evening, and 71 night. It actually doesn't run at all during the day (currently 76).

It may take a bit for your temperature to come down (especially over the next few days), but it shouldn't be running constantly at 74.
