The"converted rooms"seem to be lounges or study spaces. Still, it's not optimal for incoming freshman students.

Yes. Kids at PSU get emails about the opportunity to change into "traditional dorm rooms" after the first semester, when available...

DC is at Purdue and this is common there. From what I understand, students in limited housing are placed in traditional housing before October break.

I'm not an introvert and I did the same as you traveling across Austrialia and New Zealand. Youth hostels were great back then. I just can't imagine having 8 college roommates for a year!

To be honest, I had never heard of the practice of putting kids in dorm housing with 4, 6, 8 other students. Wow! I couldn't deal with my one crazy roommate back in the late 80's. I could not even imagine being forced to live with 3-6 other kids in a single room.

Have any of your kids lived in supplemental housing and do you have any tips for how to survive? It seems kind of shitty, but I'm sure my kid will survive. It just does not feel like a good vibe, although there may be advantages to having so many roommates and meeting tons of new friends. At the same time, kids have different schedules for classes and they will have a hard time coordinating these schedules in a 6-8 person dorm.

This is PSU, for those that are wondering. A quick Google search shows many other universities have supplemental housing for their students.

Any advice is welcome!
