I hope they do sue. Some speculated that they need to wait until the killer turns 18 for some reason. I think the killer's family has much more to lose -- his name gets made public, as does his family's name. If a lawsuit doesn't happen, my guess is that there's a threat of a lawsuit and then a big private settlement. The victim's family has already been very public (as you noted), so not really much more to lose for them.

Well, Katcher admitted he wouldn't have done anything differently, so the entire thing made no sense as a campaign tactic. But I agree with you that I hope there is a civil suit that leads to a big payout for the victim's family.

To get back to OP's question, I think a good candidate could have won, but Katcher was not that candidate.
