UVa weights the essay heavily during the admissions process, even for Engineering…. They expect Engineering applicants to be as literate as liberal arts candidates. My year, the engineering students had higher SAT Verbal scores than any other school…

That is a big change, they have had to do two essays for the last several years.I like the topic more than “what is your favorite word and why”.

so they dont really matter, do they?

Well, they'll notice if you don't know how to make a word—like essay—plural. And they'll clue into the fact that you misspell words (e.g. corses [sic]) or fail to capitalize words at the beginning of a sentence.

OP here, thank you! I heard that each school within UVA has its own prompt. What you posted here is for all applicants except the School of Nursing? Is DeanJ's blog the official site for UVA?

Nursing seemingly does both as I read it. She says on her blog, which is not an official uva website:

“ The change is pretty big: most applicants will answer one prompt for the UVA portion of the Common App. Those applying to the School of Nursing will answer two.”
“All Applicants (300 words or less)
What about your background, perspective, or experience will serve as a source of strength for you or those around you at UVA?
School of Nursing (250 words or less)
Describe a health care-related experience or another significant interaction that deepened your interest in studying Nursing.”
Have you searched the UVA website to see if they’ve updated it yet?

Most schools on the common app get their supplements out by August 1, when common app opens for the new season. (Last year at least one school on my kid's list took a few more days to get theirs posted.)

I can't find the prompts for 2024 on their website. Does anyone know when the school publish them?
