Wow, this is even worse for the CoC. Why wasn't he put on a military flight out of the country? Or, at the very least, you coordinate with local SK police to get this guy accompanied to the gate and on the plane back to the U.S. This is so dopey and ham-handed.

I doubt it. It’s obvious from his rank and recent jail sentence that he doesn’t have any intel, and they don’t want to discourage others from defecting. Maybe they get him to appear in propaganda videos talking about how great things are in NK.

This is history repeating itself. There was a documentary, Crossing the Line, which came out back in 2006 about 3 US soldiers in the 60s who ran to NK and defected to avoid being court-martialed. In the documentary, we see their lives all these years later, completely cut off from the rest of the world and unaware of anything that has happened outside of NK. They all found their niche in the NK propaganda machine. I wouldn't assume torture necessarily, since that's not what happened before.

His IQ was high enough for the military to put a gun in his hand and station him in the DMZ.

We rescue people when they get in trouble. Sometimes smarties get into trouble but more usually it's dummies who get themselves into trouble.

I sort of think, in this case that the US military has a responsibility here. They allowed this man to enlist, get through basic training, posted him in SK without realizing he was a nut job? Once he couldn't be deported, he should have been in military custody until that was straightened out

The US soldier ran into NK laughing. Why not just leave him there since that's what he seems to want. Freedom, and all that. I doubt he has any special military or intelligence knowledge to hurt this country.
