My kid is new and I’m curious—she’s elementary age and did summer swim team.
The tryout itself was low-maintenance: for the 9-10 age group, they were asked roughly for a lap of each stroke, a 50 free (presumably at least partially to see if there was a flip turn and if so how well it was executed), a 25 free timed sprint (one kid at a time in a lane of 4-5), and some work with a kickboard (flutter, breaststroke kick, flutter on back). That was it. My understanding from the parent meeting is that they were interested in stroke mechanics in this age group, but that wasn't all they were watching for. They were in the water for 30 minutes, and a major part of it was spent at the wall - which is actually a good thing, so that they had some space to evaluate each kid.

Why would existing swimmer need to tryout?
Get into a higher group.
I don’t think you try out for the higher groups. If you are already in RMSC the coaches evaluate throughout the season whether or not someone should move up a group. If you are a swimmer with another club looking to transfer to RMSC, they generally have you join a practice rather than go through the large summer tryout.
Thanks, we are from another swim club. This is good information though we still haven't heard from the coach and the tryout is next week. Wonder if we should just show up and ask.
If they aren’t responding it can’t hurt to show up for the tryout ready to go and have a copy of your kid’s times for them. Obviously they can look your kid up in Meet Mobile, but make it easy for them.

In the past, parents could bring their children to tryouts to aim for a higher placement, but in my experience, coaches have already decided who should move up. This year we were explicitly told not to attend tryouts.
Yeah, if you’ve been with RMSC all year, it is highly unlikely that the one time tryout in the summer is going to make any difference. You either have the times and ability to make the higher group or you don’t, that tryout with the times of other kids trying to join the club isn’t going to provide anything of value to the coaches.
