The school is High Point. She loved it on her campus tour and was really torn between HPU and JMU which she ended up accepting. She just chose her dorm on Friday and is really excited about JMU but is wondering "what if". I told her she can always reevaluate in the spring but I'm just wondering if schools hold it against you if you did not originally accept their offer. Who really knows, right?


Most people I know who went to JMU loved it. I’ll bet she won’t want to transfer once she spends some time there.

All schools have transfer requirements from credit hours to GPA. As I parent, I would put this work all on them. Your DD is probably nervous.

I definitely would not suggest transferring to High Point from JMU. JMU has much better opportunities and outcomes than HPU - HPU only looks good on that front because it's full of daddy's money types.

JMU is much stronger than High Point. Does she have learning disabilities? If so, then High Point might be the better fit. But if she can get through JMU, she would have better job opportunities.

Thirty some years ago, I had to transfer after sophomore year and two of the three schools I applied to were ones I'd turned down for freshman admission. Both accepted me again the second time around. But college admissions are nothing like that now, and I wouldn't bank on it. And, as others have pointed out, that merit money is gone. Schools don't typically offer much, if anything, to transfers.

NP. I'm going to say that, unless she makes a mess of her first year somewhere else, she will be able to transfer to High Point. They have a high acceptance rate for undergrads, they were interested in her before, and they accept transfers on a rolling basis.

NP. I'm going to say that, unless she makes a mess of her first year somewhere else, she will be able to transfer to High Point. They have a high acceptance rate for undergrads, they were interested in her before, and they accept transfers on a rolling basis.

She should call them herself and ask. Asking here and not even mentioning the school is a total waste of time, its all just opinion and conjecture. If you actually want a real answer *she needs to reach out to the place in question.

OP here. Asking if there is a chance to be accepted as a transfer student next fall. Do not care about the scholarship money.

A private university accepted my DD, offered her a generous scholarship and she rejected it for a larger, state school. My DD has not even started her freshman year but is wondering if she applies for a transfer to the private college her sophomore year; do most schools hold it against you that you declined their offer and outright reject you?
