Those are comparisons of year-to-date 2022 vs. year-to-date 2023.

Violent crime is up by 34% YTD, property crime 28%, and all crime 29%.

Burglary is down 7%, theft from auto is unchanged, assault with a dangerous weapon is 6%, and as much as you want to make this specifically about DC, it's not. The whole thing about national trends is that they are national.

Also apparently a national trend, among authoritarians, unfortunately: a desire to take self-representation, self-determination, and self-governance away from people who don't vote Republican.

Why is crime so much lower in PG county, which has 50% more people than DC?

A couple points:

-Just because crime is "up nationally" doesn't mean we should throw up our hands and say, oh well. Guess we just sit back and ride the wave. And to repeat, many city leaders denied crime was up, or that residents should be overly concerned.

-Murder is NOT up nationally this year. DC is now an outlier, and not in a good way.

From a story last month (June 8):

Homicides in some of America’s largest cities are falling after soaring during the first two years of the pandemic. ... So far this year, killings are down 12% overall in nine of the 10 most populous cities compared with the same time frame last year ... Homicides are down in six of those cities, including 27% in Los Angeles, 22% in Houston, and 16% in Philadelphia. In Texas, the cities of Dallas, San Antonio and Austin reported slight upticks. (Note: DC was not included in this list, but would have shown our murders up. Yeah I remember when March year-to-date data came out and people were like, it's only March, this doesn't show a trend yet, calm down.

And here we are in July, and it sure does!

Ugh this makes me so mad at our leadership. We can debate best policies but so many councilmen dug in on this notion that there is NOT a crime problem and now sheepishly are like, oh yeah maybe. This was clear as day two years ago and things have gotten worse even as crime in other big and more troubled cities has receded.
