My husband lost 60 pounds and kept it off and his approach on vacation that seems to work emphasizes the following three things:

1) Prioritize protein. He makes sure his meal is 3/4 protein. He basically eats as much protein as he wants, in any form he wants, but just makes sure its proportionately dominant relevant to carbs. You'll feel full and satiated for longer between meals and won't be starving when you sit down to eat your next meal. He also packs protein powder and a blender bottle to keep full between meals.
2) Pick one meal per day to go outside your "typical" eating habits. This does require some planning and forethought, but if he really wants to splash out on tacos, chips, and margaritas for dinner that night, he'll focus on eating more typical-for-him breakfast and lunch.
3) Prioritize movement. He doesn't necessarily go to the gym or anything but will make a concerted effort to get steps in, swim laps at the pool, or choose a bike riding tour over something more sedentary.

Finally, enjoy your trip. These are the moments that make life worth living. If you loosen up more than you intended, don't beat yourself up. The most important thing is that you get back to your routine when you get back.

Eat everything you like - only cut it in half or a 1/3. Return home and continue being your excellent you.

I once went on a cruise and LOST weight! The trick for me was to avoid carbs and sugar. So I ate everything but limited rice, bread, pasta and sweets. There is so much variety on cruise ships that it’s doable!

It really does depend on the cruise line. We sailed with Royal Caribbean recently and I had planned to do scrambled eggs and fruit for breakfast and hit the buffet salad bar for lunch, but it really didn't work out -- the scrambled eggs were powdered and disgusting (there were made-to-order omelets as well, but the line was too long for me to put up with), and fruit was the same every day: pineapple, watermelon, cantelope and whole apples/oranges. That was it. The salad offerings on the buffet were not good -- iceberg lettuce and spring mix, with the spring mix being so limp I didn't want it; shredded carrots; cherry tomatoes; green peppers; and balsamic vinaigrette and ranch. Basically you could make yourself a salad that would be about on the level of what you could get at McDonald's.

So yeah, I thought healthy eating would come easily, and it really didn't. The food on the cruise was so bad, I basically ate what I could tolerate.

+2

Our cruise line had a nice gym, a jogging track, and excursion days were a ton of walking (like 20,000 steps/day).

There is always a hater. Ignore. Good for you. Try to make breakfast a protein rich carb low meal. Do one true splurge a day.

Me again. We also had an app to use on board that would allow you to see the menu for the dining room in advance and plan out your meal.

Eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch.

The trip won’t disrupt anything unless you allow it to change your habits when you return.

Go and enjoy. Don’t drink your calories (I.e. avoid booze, which is pricey anyway). Don’t clean your plate.

I have lost 40lbs very slowly over the last 7 months. It was mostly COVID baking weight and some perimenopause thrown in. I am very happy with where I am now and I have been doing great. I eat in balance and I continue to slowly lose weight, but I am within 5 lbs of my goal weight.

Here’s the problem, I do well at home. I do not do well out of my very closed environment. We have not been eating out and that has been a tremendous help to me.

Now, my entire family is going on a Mediterranean cruise. We are a good time eating and drinking family. Both on the cruise and in Europe I am hoping to find strategies where I can definitely enjoy the food, but somehow try to maintain balance. This is not easy for me. I’m not great at “just eat moderate”.

Does anyone out there have experience that could help I would love some eating strategies. I just don’t want to come home feeling horrible about myself. Thoughts?
