+1 Tasty sheet cakes, so much better than Giant/Safeway.

Does he want better, or do you?

Classic Bakery - Tysons or Gaithersburg. Their frosting is way less sweet and it reminds me of “old school cake “. You can try ( purchase) one of their slices before purchasing a cake.

Betty Crocker cake box mix and then make cream cheese frosting yourself so you can control sweetness.

Wegman’s has the tastiest. Their frosting is not as sweet as the others.

I know you said not giant or Safeway but both them and Harris teeter have an option for a less sweet icing. I think that is what you are trying to find.

Wegmans may be a good option.

If it is just the shape, I think bakeries will do a larger rectangular cake but you are going to pay a lot.

Wegmans and Fresh Market are both good options. I also think the box mixes would work well.

What about an ice cream cake? Marble slab does good ones.

Is Sugar Fox selling their cakes anywhere? Their cakes were not super sweet.

I’ve had really good experiences with baked goods from Fresh Market.

When I want an "old school" cake, I go to Woodmoor Pastry Shop. They are good, but they are very sweet.

"Old school bday cakes" for us meant mom made a box of Duncan Hines and cool whip as the frosting.

We're celebrating my son's 19th birthday with a small family party tonight. He wants an old school birthday cake -- kind of like the Giant/Safeway sheet cakes he remembers from his childhood, but better -- not as sugary sweet, etc. I can think of lots of bakeries with fancier cakes, but where do we find this unicorn? Prefer a location in Chevy Chase/Bethesda/Upper NW, but willing to travel farther.
