We pay anywhere between $20-25. I usually ask the sitter her rate. Also, if only one kid, I expect closer to $20. For 3 I’m happy to pay closer to $25.

Are these rates in DC or other areas? I'm in Nova and charge $20/hr for two kids, $18/hr for one. Looks like I should raise my rates!

Former nanny, minimal TV time, very engaged and attentive with kids.

We pay $25hr for our 5yo and 2yo. Our sitter is 22yo but she's a full time nanny for another family during the day. She's fantastic, my kids LOVE her, and I want to be her first choice if she gets multiple date night offers.

We pay $15 for HS kids, $20 for college kids, and $25 for daycare teachers and moonlighting au pairs or nannies. I never offer a rate, I ask “what is your rate” and that’s what they ask for. This is for elementary age kids who basically put themselves to sleep.

We pay $15 an hour to a HS sitter for one kid. She generally needs feeding and sometimes driving somewhere. We guarantee $40 even if we only need an hour and a half ( happened this week for example)

$25 for high school students to watch 2 elementary school kids. It’s a lot but the high school students are mature, engaging and fun. They’re also busy with schoolwork and extracurriculars, so we have to make it worth their time

I think some of the above posters are posting nanny rates. There is a difference between a babysitter and a nanny.

$27 per hour for 4 & 7 year olds for an experienced (worked in a daycare and also as a nanny for 3 years) 22-year old sitter we love. Used to only pay $25, but offered her a raise last year in light of inflation.

Offer 20. You want only the most responsible sitters.

What is your experience with the current going rate for babysitters in the DC area?

In my region I've been paying $15/hour for a HS aged sitter for one child who is asleep 75% of the time. Moving closer to the city and curious what you are paying on average. I would likely continue to find and hire HS students (versus a professional sitter or service). Thank you.
