At 16 my father lied about his age to join WW2. At 18 on Christmas eve in Belguim his platoon was spending the night in a church, which was hit by German artillery and everyone died but him and one other solider. We never knew about it until 15 years ago on his death bed.

OP, patriotism comes from a shared belief of good and evil. Unfortunately over the past 2 decades its been exploited from all countries mentioned here and apathy ensues.

Since the Fourth of July I’ve heard arguments from both sides on why this country isn’t worth defending in a war or having any pride in.

I think it’s great to be critical of one’s country and its past but I believe anti-jingoism has gone too far and is an ill fit for this new era of great power competition where the other side, Russia/China are as patriotic as ever and we are now locked in a Cold War with. I personally don’t want to live in a world dominated by the likes of Xi Jinping or Putin and the more we tear ourselves down the more likely this is to happen. We could use a bit more patriotism nowadays and a bit less America hatred.

I find it very hard to believe you have spoken with people who don't think this country is worth defending in a war.

Perhaps your definition of patriotism needs adjusting.

I find it hard to believe that you find that hard to believe.

Not to mention Representative Eric Swalwell, democrat on the House Intel Committee, sleeping with a Chinese spy.

I'm with you OP. I'm disgusted that we fill our childrens' brains with anti-US propaganda and then have the nerve to complain about Russian and Chinese disinformation.

Quiz: Which president sets up shell companies and funnels $30-40 Million through them as kickbacks from Beijing for making the "correct" decisions?

Become? They've been useful idiots for Russia and China since 2016.

China and Russia also don’t want to live in s world dominated by America. Your problem is that americas dirty laundry overseas can’t be hidden any longer and people don’t want to pretend it doesn’t exist.

Why are you complaining? This is what happens when you have a democracy and let people think for themselves. Some will be far left others far right because they are free to think and do whatever they want. This is the expression of the diversity of human opinions. That's the price you pay for having a democracy and you have to accept that. Russia and China are more patriotic because there is no diversity of opinions. The authoritarian regime forces everyone to be patriotic from a very young age and to all think the same.

We need an authoritarian leader like Trump who understands what is at stake and can force us all to follow his path and make America Great Again.

What are the characteristics and actions of a patriotic American?

The war has exposed Russia as a laughingstock. They’re not going to be dominating anything anytime soon.

China’s growth will slow as they deal with an aging population—the same issue that has plagued Japan. And it’s unclear whether they’re capable of innovating themselves or just stealing western technology.

And what makes you think citizens of those countries are more patriotic? Are you fluent in Chinese and Russian and do you talk to people from those countries? Or are you just reading op-eds by Americans like David Brooks who make such claims without any firsthand knowledge.

You sound level headed. I wouldn't be friends with either camp you describe, but certainly not the ones who sympathize with the racists and xenophobes on the right.
