Tempur-pedic 3in mattress topper. Order now before they are sold out. Remember most dorm beds are twin XL.

I’d prefer to encase the mattress by itself, but will a fitted sheet will be enough to hold it all together and prevent the topper from sliding around. Also, should the topper should have some kind of protection in case she spills stuff on it?

I don’t think the mattress encase is necessary. They aren’t regular mattresses. They are already covered with plastic. We just added the mattress topper and a waterproof mattress cover (it was deep enough for both the mattress and pad - the mattresses are very thin). Did this for four colleges are all mattresses were basically the same.

Some colleges will not allow outside mattresses

You would have to store the provided mattress somewhere too which could be hard in a dorm room.

Yes.
The mattresses that most dorms come with aren't just a regular mattress like you have at home. They are covered in a dark blue vinyl--waterproof and less likely for bed bugs to take up residency.

The college parent FB group made it seem like this is a must have. I didn’t understand why but started to believe it. My son said he didn’t want one so we didn’t get one and he had no issues at all. Maybe have your kid try the bed and buy one if he has issues?

We got the organic latex mattress topper from Turmerry because the non-natural ones outgas and smell terrible. If you’re going to be sleeping on something for 8 hours a night, it should be natural. Amazon sells something similar.

Ikea Tananger. Twin XL and comes with a nice zipper cover, so your sheet is not right on top of the foam.

DD found the others too squishy and most come without a cover.

We got the Lucid. I’d recommend three inches. More is too thick, less is not enough padding.

Saatva. Expensive but DC has arthritis. Happy with the purchase

What worked well for your kid? It sounds like my son’s freshman dorm is bare bones and I’m sure the beds are terrible.

Thanks.
