Our first international trip (not including the caribbean on cruises) was Quebec City and Montreal. European feel without the long haul flight and time change. But, DS was 8 so a little younger. He's almost 12 now and we are doing Copenhagen for 4 days plus a cruise this summer.

I think you could take a 12 year old just about anywhere.

Thank you for the suggestions. We would be traveling with a 12 year old, likely over spring break or early summer break.

You can’t go wrong traveling to Europe for a first international trip. We just booked tickets to FRA for 2024 (family of 4) and it cost us about $7500 for the airfare. I am curious as to the ago of your child and what time of year you were thinking of traveling. If you are traveling over the Thanksgiving break, I’d recommend Budapest. Literally anywhere in Europe would be fine - whatever place seems interesting to your family.
Costa Rica would be an easy and good first trip too, especially if your child is studying Spanish in school

My first international trip was to Mexico City. It was amazing. So different from my suburban life! You can go out to teotihuacan for a day trip. Easy to get around. Parks, museums, plazas. I think it’s be a great first international trip.

Ireland. Super kid-friendly, nice people, no language barrier. Anywhere in German-speaking Europe is also very kid-friendly.

Most European capitals and big cities are a good bet. If you want some alternative choices I’d recommend combining cities that are reasonably close to each other such as Vienna and Bratislava, or Amsterdam and The Hague, (or maybe Brussels, Brugge, Ghent) etc.

Marrakesh, Morocco may also work.

What’s a good first trip out of the country for a family of 3 with some limitations:
6-7 days max
Must travel on school schedule
Budget around $7,000 but decent number of hotel points available
We generally prefer city to hiking
