Yup this is standard for NYC. There are companies that will act as your guarantor for a fee.

Having just rented an apartment on the UWS, that was true about the tenant income (some places asked for 50x).

My son graduated college May and has a job in lower Manhattan. He is looking to find an apartment/roommates. His preferred areas are Williamsburg, Bushwick (Brooklyn) or East Village but flexible. If anyone knows of something available, please share. Thank you!
