The op said it was at the YMCA childcare. Parents can't sit in the childcare. If the kid needed to do school work, it sounds like he's in summer school, but the summer school isn't at the y.

She asked the childcare attendant, who was an adult and also mentioned she had already asked the front desk. Parents aren't allowed to sit in the babysitting area. They were sitting in the general lobby area doing his school work and his pencil broke.

Could a pencil sharpener have solved his problem?

It's summer, few kids are in summer school this year. This entire situation is a bit strange.

An American childcare organization does not have pencils on hand?

The mother sounds very overwhelmed and overreacted, obviously, but it's ridiculous the YMCA could not accommodate her very basic request.

Do they have soap in the bathrooms? Kind of the same level of need here.

Not entitled. Why don't they have pencils?!??!?

I would have been frustrated.

People expect more from the YMCA as they are a non-profit. I do think pencils are basic and they should have some on hand. It looks like this mom has a special needs kid and uses the childcare to work with this child while the other one is out of the way.

Given that she was told they would accommodate homework when she signed up I find it pretty absurd they don’t have the one single thing kids need for homework. Thus not entitled.

Mom asks for a pencil so her son, aged about 6-7, can do his schoolwork. I am assuming he's in summer school. The employees at the YMCA childcare weren't accommodating. Mom gets a little frustrated and pulls the younger child out of gym childcare. The mom was going to work on the schoolwork with the older child, it seems, but they didn't have a pencil. The mom says she's confused about why they don't have access to pencils. She also mentioned for $150 a month per child, the YMCA should be able to give them pencils so the older children can draw. She also said when they were touring, it was mentioned the kids could draw and do artwork or work on homework. I can see both sides. I think more than anything, the mom was annoyed she has a child in summer school.
