This is absolutely insane to me. I'm not saying it's wrong or bad but I'm truly shocked by it. I love my husband but I would push him in front of a fast moving train if it meant saving one of my children.

Missing someone you love and enjoy the company of is normal but should not be avoided when they are launching into their adult lives. The relationship simply changes. It's not a situation where you should "be careful what you wish for" because it might actually happen, it's a situation where you should be proud of your parenting skills, proud of your child, and proud of yourself for being stable and grounded enough to enjoy a new phase of your own life while they lean into theirs.

I have about five weeks until the nest is empty. I have really mixed feelings. I'll miss the kids a lot -- they're not much trouble, and we really get along. But I'm interested to see where things go when they're not around and a central focus of our energy.

We have “make your own dinner” nights now but now it will be like that every night! Doing a happy dance. I may just eat cereal for the entire first semester he is gone. Lol.

I'm right there with you! I'm a single parent and I am tired! I don't want to make dinner anymore and I don't want to nag anymore. I don't mind sharing the car because I'm a teacher and have off in the summer but I had no idea how much work getting him ready for college would be. It's more work than getting into college!

There is no reason you were doing any of this with kids when they were teenagers. Let them figure out how to get around without a car. Uber! They can eat pbj too or make their own food. Set them up for success and not be a boomerang kid like the other poster. Nothing worse than thriving and then failing.

I’m divorced with primary custody. I feel like I get to practice for empty nesting every other weekend.

It is great! Part of the greatness is the developing new relationship you will get to have with your adult kids. Very satisfying!

The only thing that is on a par with the greatness of this is the wonderfulness of retirement!

Nope - I am with OP, counting down the days until they leave, so I can miss them again! Imagine cleaning the house and it staying clean until they return at Thanksgiving! Grocery shopping for 2 is so much easier. And then there's naked time any time we want!!!!
