If your kid isn’t swimming A meet, they won’t be in the A relay meet.

http://www.mcsl.org/documents/rlyorder.html Here’s the list of events at relay carnival. If your swimmer has not swam at any A meets it is very unlikely they will go the “Divisonal”/A carnival. Some pools may have a B carnival that they participate in with other local pools.

At a division B pool your child will need to be quite fast to compete. For the younger kids the options are the gender medley relay, mixed freestyle relay and then the three events that take swimmers from different ages - the crescendo freestyle, the graduated medley, and the graduated freestyle (this last one is also swum at the conclusion of A meets)

For a not top swimmer your bet is going to be to get the kid to the #2 or 3 spot in one of the more technical strokes (breast/butterfly) and then assume the faster kids will take the other spots in the age /gender specific medley.

Basically for 8U girls (example) there’s one event with two freestyle spots(mixed freestyle) three events with one freestyle spot (assuming pools usually stick the 8U in freestyle for the graduated medley), and then one event with one of each stroke.

Division N poster - your carnival lineup has already been sent to parents? And I’m assuming yours is actually Sunday July 9 not Saturday?

I think the OP meant they are in division B for MCSL, not the "B" relay.

It is the divisional relays, the word "carnival" is misleading. Honestly, it is harder to make than the A meets. BUT, if your swimmer is in the top 4 for the age group for an event, they could be swimming in the age group medley. Hard to say without knowing your team.

Division B does not have a second divisional relay carnival for “b meet” swimmers (that is confusing since we are division b/different than b meet). But your individual pool may have a relay carnival for “b meet” swimmers - you should check with the reps.

Typically, a swimmers best shot to swim relay carnival is the age group medley relay (so a backstroker, breaststroker, flyer and freestyler from each age group/gender). Typically, those kids likely swim A meets but bc it is a medley, you never know (for example, maybe a kid isn’t top 6 in freestyle but is fourth fastest in another stroke a stroke. So at an a meet, they don’t swim bc it is top 3 kids in other strokes but at carnival kid ends up swimming that stroke in the relay once you account for swimmers 1-3 swimming the other strokes. It is probably unlikely but possible. Opportunities are a little different for 15-18 but assuming you have a younger swimmer based on question.

Coaches should get a lineup out soon, I would think.

Most age groups need 4 swimmers - there is a medley relay in each age group. It is common that swimmers 3&4 on this relay only swim this relay. There is no limit for an individual swimmer other than only swimming in their age group (or open) relays.

Technically the 15-18s could be as low as 2, but that would be if you happen to have very fast 13-14s for the open medley.

I believe our team didn’t include a 4th 15-18 boy last year as there were a coupe faster 14s.

A carnival is pretty limited. Usually only something like the two best freestylers have multiple events and 4 best kids in age group (for IM) get to swim. Our team does a B carnival with another pool or two so more kids get a shot at the action.

My 9/10 DD has been swimming A meets and is doing 4 relays on Saturday. We are division N.

Most divisions hold a B relay carnival a week or so after the A carnival. For our club it’s only open to swimmers who did not swim the A relay carnival.

One of my kids did it as their first meet years ago and swam on a 6U mixed relay. It was probably one of the cutest races I’d ever seen.

The meet is a lot of fun as opposed to the A carnival that is used to try and make all stars. I had one swimmer swim 5 relay last year. The other swam one. They were number 1 and number 4 in their age divisions for reference.

NP. What’s a B relay carnival? I don’t think we have that. Is it intrasquad?

We are a lower division and I have one swimmer swimming 2-3 A meet heats a week. She will probably only get in 1 relay for the carnival, so I'm guessing your B swimmer won't have a chance.

However the B relay carnival is fun! My other swimmer loves it. Really fun and festive for our team.
