Second, I’m a liberal whose father served in the Korean War in the Air Force. I took the ASVAB and did well. The only job they had for me was medic. This was in the late 80s during the draw down. I ended up not enlisting. The Gulf War happened 6 months later.
Why I am against my daughter enlisting. I work with many former military. It doesn’t seem like a welcoming place for women. The sexual assault numbers are terrible and it’s a hostile environment for women. I also one who associates the military with the Insurrection (as the article mentioned) and the 3%, Proud Boys, and Oath Keepers. I see it as a proxy for the White Supremacy/Neo Nazi movement…Especially when there is any sort of backlash toward DEI the military undertakes.
See but you and I (I think I was the second to reply) read the article and your experience is largely what the article about. I don’t like WSJ but OP should have at least read it.

Vast majority with warrior skills are masculine. Masculinity is highly correlated with conservative values. Military becoming hostile to conservative values. Warriors don’t see the military as prestigious anymore.

Why do we need so many people in the military? Isn't only like 1% actually served in a combat role? The ones who serve in combat experience multiple lengthy deployments.
I also read somewhere, that experiencing combat isn't necessarily an indicator of later having PTSD.
The DoD is so bloated. That's what really needs to be fixed.
Shouldn't we have better technology to fight modern warfare? We couldn't defeat insurgents with their make shift home made low tech IEDs.

They leave out a main factor. Trump has made the rank and file conservatives (who were formerly pro military) anti war and anti woke. Liberals who are pro war now do not join the military and never have. Here we are with proxy WW3 in Europe and China on the move with our military shrinking.
