Yes. The gas tax is pegged to inflation, as it should be.
And you do realize that increased gas prices drives price inflation in other products. But ok, genius.
I'm not sure what your point is? Please explain.
Yes, the CPI includes gas prices. Yes, the gas prices in the CPI include gas taxes. No, the gas taxes in the gas prices in the CPI do not make a meaningful difference. The increase today is going from 42.7 cents per gallon to 47 cents per gallon. So 4.3 cents per gallon. If you had driven all the way to Damascus (or if you were already in Damascus) yesterday, you could have bought gas for about $3.20 per gallon. Today, that would be $3.24 per gallon. My car has a twelve-gallon gas tank, so if it were completely on E when I filled it up, it would be $38.88 vs. $38.40.
Also, you know those roads you drive on? And you know how driving on roads damages the roads - the heavier the vehicle, the more the damage? Gas taxes help to pay for the maintenance of those roads.
For some families every penny counts. Yeah I know it’s hard for you to believe and it’s not YOUR problem. Self-centered frick.

You know what would increase prices a lot? If our infrastructure were not maintained and fell apart. Which is what happens if you don't fund it. And guess what funds infrastructure? Think real hard.
