The increase today is going from 42.7 cents per gallon to 47 cents per gallon. So 4.3 cents per gallon. If you had driven all the way to Damascus (or if you were already in Damascus) yesterday, you could have bought gas for about $3.20 per gallon. Today, that would be $3.24 per gallon. My car has a twelve-gallon gas tank, so if it were completely on E when I filled it up, it would be $38.88 vs. $38.40.
Also, you know those roads you drive on? And you know how driving on roads damages the roads - the heavier the vehicle, the more the damage? Gas taxes help to pay for the maintenance of those roads.

Families for whom every penny counts, to that extent, are most likely to not have a car at all. They are most likely to depend on transit. Guess what helps to fund transit? Yes, the gas tax.

inflation can go down, will the tax go down too? i think not.
That's not how economics works. If inflation is lower, that just means prices are increasing at a slower rate. Inflation can't "go down," as that would be deflation in which case we'd be in real trouble.
