The s is not silent cause of the final e as others noted. However, I think the ending can sort of get swallowed up if it’s in a sentence in the way that native French speakers seem to blur many words together such that a whole phrase becomes two mumbled syllables.

Is the s in Nicoise silent? I pronounce it since that is how I learned French. It does sound better with the s silent though.
