No. I have T2D and my endo & nutritionist both have me on a modified keto diet. I say modified because most of the fruits & veggies that are banned with a strict keto diet are not banned for me. I also do not eat the fatty foods allowed with keto because there's a history of heart disease in my family.

My A1C prior to starting the modified diet was 8.2. I have been on it for 16 months now and my A1C is now 5.6 which is the borderline with normal and prediabetes.

I went from taking 2000mg of Metformin per day to 1000mg/day to now just 1 500mg pill each day.

I have lost around 25 lbs. with diet alone and no exercise added in other than my daily walks with my dog. I am working on my gym and exercise phobias because I know I need to add in exercise to make things better.

To be clearer, my friend's GI is the one said the gallstones were caused by keto.

Curious as to your medical background that enables you to develop such an informed hypothesis, OP. Please provide those credentials. Thanks.

Keto always seemed very extreme to me, and I’ve noticed a lot of keto processed foods have fake sugars in them to keep the ratios in line. The science is all over the place on those.

My spouse is pre diabetic with an awful family history. The only thing that has stopped his slide is limiting his carbs. Not to keto levels, but certainly far below “FDA Food Pyramid” recommended levels.

This got me curious and i found this article below. At first i thought any possibility of keto causing diabetes seemed crazy,
But a quick google search turned up a lot more controversy than expected. In a nutshell, it seems keto is beneficial in avoiding type 2 diabetes and not causing it, but there are some skeptics out there and lab studies on mice have shown some becoming diabetic for keto.

Keto reverses diabetes. I actually know two vegetarians who have diabetes now. One went keto to fix it; the other did not.

Take a physiology class instead of engaging in baseless hard thinking.

I think it's more a factor of them getting older. Not keto.

Really? Don’t you think it’s far more likely that people with known family histories of T2 diabetes try to restrict carbs earlier in life (both for weight loss and health) but the genetic component gets them in the end anyway?

My family history is lousy with T2 diabetes and I’ve restricted carbs at various levels my entire life. If I get it in the end anyway trust it won’t be due to excess coconut oil.

No, it improves insulin resistance and makes your body process carbs and sugar better

I am really wondering about this. Some people started to follow it bcs they wanted to lose or maintain a low weight as they got older. Ultimately, they can't keep it up, and when they eat carbs, their sugars skyrocket. Some are now on metformin. Is it possible that they programmed their body not to know how to react to carbs and sugar?
