What's most important to me in a hat is that it is lightweight and won't cause me to sweat more than I have to. I got mine at Costco. Simple khaki hat. I wear it all the time. I look like a goofball, but I have the last laugh when I stay cool and the cool people suffer.

I have one of the Eddie Bauer hats and 2 different Columbia hats. I have to say that I just don't look stylish but as a PP noted, I just have to wear the d@mn things because I need the sun protection. Even with a hat, you still have to wear sun protection. So, I suck it up and just put on my mask of blythness and carry on. I figure that confidence will carry me further than a fashionable hat.

Wallaroo hats work for me.

Oh, I actually have a San Diego hat and love it. However, it’s enormous and I have to wear it on airplanes. I have another hat that claimed to be packable, but now its mutilated from being packed. Anyone know who can restore it? The online tutorials about reshaping straw hats don’t cut it.

Ha, my gardening hat is a Tilly hat. I do love it, but I look kind of silly in it. I think the issue is that the styling is fairly sporty and I am not really a sporty person -- I just need a very practical sun hat. But I agree they make good quality hats! I have looked at their wide brimmed straw hats as an option but am worried they won't stay on my head in the wind, since they don't come with a tie or strap.

I have a Tilley hemp sunhat and it's the best one I've ever owned. They don't make the same exact one anymore, but do still have hemp hats. I find the material to be the most breathable and cool, compared to straw hats. Plus, they always have the chin straps.

I also have a packable straw hat from Jcrew that retains its shape well after being rolled up. I got one that fits my head pretty snugly so the lack of strap is no issue.

My skin burns really easily and while of course I wear sunscreen, it's not enough. I like a hat big enough to protect not only my face but my ears, neck, and possibly even my shoulders/back/chest to some degree.

I have a great wide brim hat I use for gardening, the pool, and running errands. But it make me look dumb and old. It's a gardening hat with a very wide brim that has some rigid structure, plus an adjustable strap so it doesn't fly away. Incredibly practical, but also supremely uncool.

I have travel coming up and would love a cute straw hat or maybe a twill hat with better style, to use instead. Something that doesn't scream "middle aged mom with no fashion sense." I'm okay with a narrower brim than my current hat, but would love it to offer more protection than just a baseball cap or one of those little bucket hats.

Any ideas?

Just wear your hat, you need the protection. Someone who needs the protection but does not wear the hat screams “no sense” regardless of age.

Tuckernuck has a bunch of cute ones. The bow on this one might seem like a little much, but it looks really great on.

I have this hat and LOVE it: https://www.madewell.com/canvas-lantern-bucket-hat-NK773.html?dwvar_NK773_color=EB5788&cgid=accessories-hats#start=25

The tie/strap is removable. It’s cotton but very thick so completely protective, and the brim isn’t floppy (which is often an issue with wider-brimmed hats). I think it looks cute, but more importantly it’s the first sun hat I’ve bought that is comfortable and protective, which are the most important things to me.

Madewell makes a nice packable hat but I don’t think the brim is wide enough to get chest/shoulders in shade.

There are lots of floppy big SPF hats online and they will do the trick but not be exactly fashionable. I think I’d rather be burn and freckle free at this stage.
