I would rent and not buy but yes, lots of seniors in that area though I can't tell you any specific buildings or social activities. I would recommend a high rise with construction such that you can't hear families with small children running around upstairs (yes, as the latter have had bad experiences with this).

Try to see what buildings have shuttles to the grocery store and are close to a bus stop.

OP here - thank you for the feedback. we do have a walkout basement with full bath here in NW DC, so if she gets to a stage where she needs more care, she can move here, but she wants to live independently as long as possible.

Even if they are highly mobile now, issues can arise fast and they may need mobility devices/accommodations sooner rather than later. I'd look specifically for a unit that is already accessible.

My mom (80) is thinking of relocating to DC to be near us. She wants to live independently in an apartment (can't afford any of the senior living facilities). I see some nice apartments/ condos in Cathedral Heights and McLean Gardens, and I see seniors out walking in that area. It seems to be a good location because it's walkable to CVS/ Giant. I was wondering if anyone has any insider info on what it's like being a senior in that area. Are there social events/activities? Are the apartment buildings (thinking of The Westchester) friendly, i.e, people meet and know their neighbors? Are there any apartments in that area that happen to have a higher ratio of seniors that I should look at? Max price we can spend for 1 bedroom is $400k (I know HOA costs vary, so ideally we'd like to keep those costs down as well). PS If there are other areas/ apartments we should consider for an 80 year old, please share as well!
