One of the pros to taking Honors classes is that there are more sections of the classes so there is more flexibility in scheduling.

I do think that people over play the open enrollment piece. Parents do not want their kids to struggle or fail so I doubt that there are too many kids in honors classes who don't belong there. The AAP classes are filled with kids that have been screened but I think that there are plenty of people who will tell you that not every kid who was screened does well in LIV or the AAP classes.

You can apply, but depending on your goals it may not be worth it.

Honors curriculum is open enrollment. Some might say, particularly at certain schools, that it impacts the quality of the cohort. I had one go through AAP and one through non-AAP Honors classes at our MS and can honestly say there was very little difference. Maybe an extension/extra project here and there (in Social Studies, primarily, IIRC) but that was about it. And the students weren't significantly different in performance or behavior. Math is separate from AAP, and FWIW my non-AAP kid went from 6th grade math to Math7H (basically skipping a year) with very little trouble. We did some prep work the summer before to catch her up a bit.

Yes, but honors classes are open enrollment in 7th grade and beyond so I don't know that I would even bother. Just put your kid in the honors level classes you want them to take and be done with it.

In DD's experience, the kids joining AAP in 5th and 6th were the kids who had been pushing into math since 3rd.

Some kids tested poorly, or not at potential, in the earlier grades and are fine in school initially. Then something clicks, I know a really scientific term, and the kid takes off later. I would say a child with strong grades and probably strong iReady and SOLs are in a good place to apply for AAP in the higher ES grades. I would expect that such a kid is passing advanced on SOLs.
