I kept my name and gave DD mine as her middle. She likes having both and it’s never been a problem (we’re in DC and about half of kids have this set up or both last names as their last).

Genealogy is patriarchal. Its logical to trace kids by maternal lineage because paternity until proven by DNA, isn't a reliable source.

This. The thing I cared most about was all of us having the same name. It makes so many things easier. If we all had my maiden name or an unhyphenated combo, I would be equally happy, but DH felt like his dad would be hurt (?) if he changed his so we did it the traditional way.

Hyphenating is a pain. For
Robinson-Jones. Does the last name start with an R or a J? The real answer doesn’t really matter, because depending on the circumstances is listed as either.

Everyone spelled my last name wrong (think Smyth), so I took my husband's and we used it for the kids too. I did ditch my original middle name and made my maiden name my middle name. Alas my parents had 2 girls who both took their spouses names, so no more Smyths🤔
