Sorry, I wrote that in a way that was confusing. We have a full bath on the second floor and a full bath on the first floor. There's a half bath in the basement.

How many square feet?

Frankly, it sounds like you just have too much crap and what you really need is to get rid of a lot of it. You sound like some of those house shows where they talk about needing to get a bigger house, more closets, etc, but when they show it you can tell they just need to get rid of crap. Nobody needs 150 pair of shoes.

Do a mass cleanout of the junk in your basement. Make three piles: keep, toss, and donate. For every item you keep, at least five items need to leave the house. As I have frequently told my husband, most things do not grow better with age. It's better to get them to someone who can use them before they deteriorate.


I'm sure there is some stuff we can purge, but I'm talking about stuff like Christmas decorations, camping supplies, suitcases, sports equipment... things that we use but not year round.

Do not make a keep pile. That’s just procrastination. If you’re keeping something put it away where it goes. If it doesn’t have a home in your house you don’t really need it.

If it's the only bathroom in the basement, then getting rid of it is stupid and will definitely affect the value of the house. If you really can't figure out how to declutter and organize your junk, then hire someone to help you out.

It would be very stupid if you ever plan to sell. Why not stack up all your boxes and storage bins in there? Then, at least you wouldn’t be paying money to decrease your property value.

We have a finished basement but the layout is terrible. We need more storage space, and the storage spaces we have currently aren't easily accessible. We never end up using our basement for anything because there is always junk everywhere.

I want to remove the half bath in our basement and put in a large walk in closet. Is it crazy to take out a bathroom? We literally never use it.
