I know the area well, and the demographics have shifted dramatically.
The neighborhood you are considering is an anomaly: a nicer, newer neighborhood plopped in the middle of aging housing stock with many apartments and other low-income rentals.
You should really drive around and check out grocery stores, etc. before settling there. See if you feel safe after dark at the local 7-11 or shopping center.
Also: check out the sex offender data.
Not OP, but I wouldn’t feel safe at any 7-11 at night anywhere. And there are a million grocery stores in the greater silver spring area, so you’re not limited to the one that is closer to your house by .10 mile. OP, silver spring (all of its many zip codes) is a big, diverse place. In general, dcum is not a very good place to ask about it because you get responses from people who don’t live there but have judgments about it, unless it happens to be one of the handful of schools that have a critical-enough mass of parents that post on these boards.
