Does HW depend on the school or is it FCPS policy per grade?

DS is in Advanced Math, he passed the 6th grade SOL (as a 5th grader) advanced. He did not have homework and finished his work at school with enough time to be able to play a fair amount of chess with other classmates who finished early as well. He is a kid who likes math and didn’t find it hard. He has classmates that were struggling with the math.

Advanced Math is the same math curriculum taught in AAP which is why I am chiming in. There were kids in his class who got 2’s and found it really challenging. I would guess that there are kids in LIV that find the math really challenging.

Honestly, LIV is going to be the same as any other classroom. There will be kids who find it all easy, kids who find the math or LA easy and the other subject hard, kids who find both subjects doable but they have to work at it, and kids who struggle.

Is there an FCPS website link which shows the AAP curriculum? I could only find the regular grade curriculum.

Yes, there is value. I wish all kids got to do it. It expands their vocabulary.
And it can help when they learn a foreign language (depending on what language it is).

Wow. I wish we got something. My kids are more likely to do something if the teacher "assigns" it.

Not very hard. HW depends on the school. Ours has none sadly.

DC’s school sent home a pretty extensive math and language arts packet for LLIV that DC is supposed to complete over the summer. I understand this will allow them to move through the Grade 3 math quickly in the first quarter. Overall the packet is pretty doable -no issues- but DC likes math and is good at it.

I have a level III kid in advanced LA and advanced math and it’s really easy for them (just finished 5th grade). There is no homework.

It is pretty accelerated but if your child belongs there they will be just fine!! The kids I see that struggle are the ones whose parents really fought to get them in but then have to stay fully involved and on top of their kids to ensure they keep up. That's hard - if your kid is self-motivated, it's much much easier on the whole family.

IME, the only thing that could be a little challenging is the accelerated math if they are not good at math.

Still no homework until 4th grade.

Math is compressed, such that kids will learn both 3rd and (some/most) 4th grade math in the same year. Language Arts isn't that far ahead; more like just a different peer group, so kids aren't still learning how to read/write and can focus on activities rather than remedial tasks.

If your child can't multiply, you might work on that this summer. Otherwise, read to them and have them read to you. Just regular household learning. If you want to start the competition for Thomas Jefferson Highschool, then look into supplementation through math programs (AOPS, RSM).

For parents that have kids in level iv aap, how challenging is the work? I read that 3rd grade math is compressed to the first quarter and same for language arts. My kid really enjoys school and I don't want to take the joy out of that from loads of homework. Well, I guess it's too late since I already accepted haha. How can I prepare my kid for next year?
