Does anyone know if they look only at EOY or the highest score? MOY was 1046 but dropped a bit EOY. SOL was 600 so I’d think that was enough but maybe not

In some previous thread here - search "Math Inventory"? - a PP listed the criteria that they use: MI, SOL, and quantitative score from the cogat. I think you could reach out to the math coach at WMS to ask how decisions are made. What was your child's quantitative cogat? FWIW, I was told that a very small number of incoming 6th graders go to pre-algebra, but I don't know if that was lower because of the virtual years or that's always true. One thing that we are personally considering is that that pre-algebra class is a math 6/7/8 class and then leads only to the intensified options in math. If you want them to be in pre-algebra next year, spend this summer covering math 6/7. You'll be in a stronger position at that point to advocate for your kid then.

Looks like your kid would be on the borderline, not a clear-cut case. I think it’s important for you to consider how middle school academics are handled versus elementary school. If your child doesn’t do well on an assignment or test the teacher is not chasing after you/them to make sure they understand it. They have to have the executive functioning skills/ be a self starter and reach out to that teacher themselves. You will not be contacted if they are falling behind. Is your child ready for that? they certainly may be, mine was, but something to consider.

Last year the benchmark was 1046 on math inventory and 550+ on the end of year SOL.

They don’t want parents requesting anything… they will assign everyone’s math class this summer. But you can reach out anytime and request the class you want, or wait and see then act. I think they’ll put the child in pre-algebra with that MI score, though.

A score of 931 isn’t really high enough. There’s nothing wrong with regular sixth grade math.

Wondering when we find out about math placement. Math v pre-algebra.

Our 5th grader’s end of year Math Inventory is 931.

The winter Virginia Assessment was 1680.

Did very well in math class.
