Unfortunately, Lee Highway and Lee-Jackson Highway were named after the Confederate Lee & Jackson, in the early 1900s. If it had been named after Lighthorse Harry Lee for his Revolutionary War service instead, we'd still have it.


wow. a piece of history that has existed for more than a century being ripped by a group of know nothing politicians. sad

and Jackson was...? It was named to put black people in their place just like all of the 'historical' monuments were placed to remind them who was in charge.

Deciding not to honor traitors is not the same as "erasing history." I am certain Northern Virginia schools are still studying the history of the Civil War and familiarizing themselves with what men like Robert E. Lee, Jeb Stuart, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson did — including the fact that they were fighting to continue the right to own people as property.

Why name streets and schools after traitors? We don't have Stalin Boulevard, Lenin Highway or Hitler Parkway, right? But no one is claiming we are "erasing" the history of the Soviet Union or WWII. Naming a street or school after someone is supposed to be an honor, not a history lesson.
