I've taken one out of Boothbay Harbor, too, and we didn't see any whales, so they gave us free tickets to use in the future. We didn't have time to use them but gave them to relatives who lived in the area. Dunno if this is standard practice or not but it was with whichever company we used that day (probably Cap'n Fish's).

Boothbay tours are great, I did the Cap'n Fish puffin tour and got a chance to see porpoises, puffins, and a couple obscure seabirds (gannet, tern, etc). Tons of fun.

We've done it in New England, Alaska and outside Seattle - we've seen whales breaching (including a group of Orcas), whales hunting and catching prey, and lots more than just the back of one whale. You've had some bad luck.

Growing up, we would go to Plymouth Mass for whale watching in July.

I will be visiting family in Wayland, MA this summer and would love to take my kids on a whale watch. Of the options mentioned so far, it looks like Plymouth would be the closest. Any others? (Wayland is a bit west of Boston.)

Done whale watching out of Barnstable, MA and Juneau, Alaska. Saw tons of whales at both locations. We did the Barnstable tour twice. They go to the same water as P-Town boats- Stelwegen (Sp?) Bank. The boat ride from P-town is much shorter, but we were staying in Hyannis, which is closer to Barnstable. We went in midsummer, and it was great- lots of whales.

There are at least four orcas (travfeling together) spotted today in Ptown, as we speak, OP. The cool part is, locals name the whales, and they have a certain way of differentiating.
