I donated it to MCPS auto program.

Don't bother donating. They'll just junk it anyway & take the cash, and then you run the risk of the IRS rejecting your deduction claim. Better to sell, then donate the cash, if you are so inclined.

I had a similar car situation to yurs. Are you in the DMV? Nico Buys Cars - you can go online and get an estimate and they will beat any Carmax offer by 200. My friend told me about this place (and I live in Gaithersburg so I had seen one of their employees doing sign flips on the side of the road). They took my barely alive Mazda (and they came to me to pick it up).

Cars for kids? Love their jingle ads as they have me pounding my skull on the wall.

Can the car be driven? If it can, drive it to Carmax. They might give you more than $600.

Would you post back with details if you decide to donate? I’m curious. Thanks.

AAA arranged for a tow of the car from the mechanic back to my apartment. This will give me some time to make arrangements to either donate it or sell it to salvage. At least there are options.

The car is a 2013 Chevy Spark with 72K miles. I would need to spend $1300 on repairs, and then that doesn't guarantee there isn't something wrong with the engine.

It does sound like the mechanics are being honest.

The car overheated. The engine light is on. The engine was actually smoking.

I'm not sure I can donate a car that needs a $1300 repair. The mechanic doesn't recommend driving the car at this point.

Vehicles for Change is another good donation option, and they will handle pick up.

Would a tax deduction be more advantageous financially? There are many places you can donate.

I called this car salvage place. And they gave me a quote based on my VIN, mileage, year, and the most recent mechanic's report.

I am going to tow the car to my place with AAA. I ordered a printed copy of the title.

Has anyone ever done this?

Usually I trade in my car. I maybe could have gotten around $3K for a trade in before these most recent car troubles.

The salvage company is offering $600, which I think is a fair amount.

I was thinking of donating the car anyway, before this, to avoid the hassle of selling it.

I really didn't think the car was going to be worth more than $1K at trade in. But prices for used cars have gone up recently it seems.

Thank you.

$600 is a pretty good price.
What make and model?
What is wrong with it?
