In my experience, GOP’rs (men and even a few women) were FAR more likely to boast about having a vehicle with a stick shift. Really? That's so bizarre. These days, cars with manual transmissions tend to be performance-oriented models that are in high demand, exclusive, and signifiers of class. Look no further than cars like the Integra Type S, the Golf R, BMW's M models, the Porsche 911 and Cayman, etc.

Everyone I know who drives a stick - myself included - votes Democratic. They also the type of people who enjoy the actual act of driving, and prioritize experience over convenience (i.e., read physical books and newspapers instead of Kindles, cook gourmet meals from scratch instead of ordering fast food, etc). GOP'ers, in my experience, are more likely to prioritize convenience and passively want things spoonfed to them, not to mention their proclivity for grotesquely massive and definitely-not-compensating-for-anything pickup trucks and SUVs which exclusively come with automatic transmissions.

It’s like $30k now MSRP so I guess if I can get it for that, it’s not jumped too much in price.

Since it seems so unpopular maybe it won’t be an absolute nightmare to “negotiate” — we can pay cash so rates aren’t a concern but will see how financing vs CD rates are at the moment.

My last car was one and I loved driving it. It was pretty expensive for a Civic ($25K in 2016) so not sure what the cost is now comparatively but I'm assuming more. I don't think you would be looking at a mark up for a new one at this point but interest rates do still suck, if you're financing, so there's that.

A lot of memes portray a manual transmission as an anti-theft device. For me, any manual would become a “husband only” car, as my wife does not care to learn how to drive one.

The service worker doesn’t own an SI which is faster, more engaging, and more expensive. Enthusiasts who enjoy driving will seek out a manual because it’s a lot more fun and engaging to drive. Manuals sell for higher over automatics in the pre owned market. It’s a choice and not a budget constraint.
