I don’t think my household of 3 people could get a backlog of 8 loads of laundry if we tried. Maybe once one counted in bed and bath linens.

8 loads of laundry? She has way too many clothes. Sounds spoiled. Maybe you should stop doing her laundry.

My new grad has become quite the slob over the last few months. Maybe it’s him literally soiling the nest.

Ditto. This happened to us almost exactly once, and I unceremoniously dumped all her clothes on the kitchen floor and walked away. Not one of my finer moments but she got the message.

Ha ha! I have cognitive dissonance daily because my teen has a bit of OCD around germs, which makes him do weird, germier things, because the germaphobia is VERY SELECTIVE.

Things are never boring with kids. It's going to be rather quiet once they all leave the house...

Eh, not ideal but not so terrible either.

I've lived with a fully grown adult woman whose reaction to someone helping out like you did would be: "EWWW, why did you put clean laundry on the filthy counter?!"

At least your DD said she appreciated your effort?

(Scene setting: DD graduates from HS. She's been overwhelmed in recent weeks with finals, etc. and got WAY behind on laundry. We're talking like seven or eight loads. She finally got working on picking up her room (the clothes were strewn everywhere -- you couldn't see the floor). Since she was making an effort, I took pity and decided to help (since I know she will soon ask me for money to buy clothes for college and my position is I'm not giving you anything until you go through what you already have and decide what to keep/what to donate, etc).

Anyway, this scene just played out:

(DD walks in from garage, where she was just back from running a graduation-related errand. She looks disdainfully at the piles of folded clothing I've arranged on the kitchen island, which I cleaned previously.)

DD:

Dad, I appreciate you doing my laundry, but can you NOT put it on the disgusting counter?

(DD proceeds to walk to sink and drink directly from the faucet.)

AND SCENE
