You did the right thing, OP. We waited a little too long for our dog. Our love made us blind.
It's been 5 years or so and we have gotten over not doing it sooner, but if we could turn back time we would have chosen differently. You did it out of love for your cat and that's the best thing we pet owners can do.

Ugh. Same here, except my girl was 15 and a half. Went through two rounds of chemo (diagnosed last summer) and was doing great but things spiraled downhill last week with a noticeable decline the last two days - couldn’t walk, vocalizing, stopped eating. We had a vet come out to the house this morning and we held her during the process. I am in physical pain and unable to stop ruminating thoughts about her being gone. I can’t believe I won’t physically see her again.

No advice but wanted to chime in that I get it - hardest thing I’ve gone through. She was with me through my divorce and every major milestone. I have truly lost my best friend.


OP here. I’m so sorry about your girl. I too keep thinking about my kitty’s physical presence—her meows, her purring, her head bumps. I hope you are doing ok.

It's a kindness to let her go before she's suffering. Animals in the wild have horrific deaths. Living with humans has the bonus that their end can be peaceful and pain free.

You gave her a loving home for 17 years. She was lucky to have you. Now your final gift to her is to know when it's time to let her go.

I’m really sorry, OP. It’s awful. But you’re doing the right thing…when you look back on your time together, it will give you comfort to know that you didn’t prolong her pain because you weren’t ready to say goodbye.

She’s 17. She’s been totally okay—not on any meds, just a little arthritis, fat and happy. And then yesterday she just went way downhill and can now not stand up. I’m taking her to the vet at 10 but I doubt there is anything to do.

I’m just feeling so much grief about this and I’m sitting here petting her, watching her try to get up and thinking about how it’s my final hour with her. Ugh.
