Going to Rome soon…ideas?!?!

An Italian-Canadian friend of mine who lived in Rome for a time recommended a place called La Villetta dal 1940. It was fantastic, and absolutely packed with locals. It’s located maybe a quarter-mile down from Circo Massimo. The portions are also quite large, with the server warning me off of ordering a 2nd course to share with DH, in addition to the pastas we ordered.

Unfortunately, we found plenty of bad food in Italy. To be fair, we also found some great food. Since it was Italy, expectations were high. Sometimes expectations were met and others not do much. In truth the bad food wasn’t terrible, but pretty average pizza and pasta at a couple restaurants- stuff you could find anywhere in the U.S.

Ad Hoc pp here. I agree with pp who said, yes, you can find really bad food in Rome.

Testaccio is a great food neighborhood.

My DD studied for six months in Rome last year and I was fortunate to visit her several times. On my last night there on one of my trips, we went to Ad Hoc. We had a fabulous tasting menu focused on truffles, paired with wonderful wines. The ambience, food and service were all top-notch. And compared to tasting menus elsewhere, it was very reasonably priced. Here's a link:

They have two locations and since we booked last minute, we got into their newest one in Circo Massimo, and it was wonderful. A month or so later, the owner sent me a thank-you email, with an electronic cookbook. Really sweet level of service and DD and I look back on it with fond memories as a really fun mother-daughter night out.

Book ahead especially if you're there in the summer.

Either you have really low standards or you don’t know Rome. There is plenty of crappy food to be had. That’s precisely why people are asking for recommendations.

Only if you tell me you’re going — I’m headed there in early July, and I’m looking too, and man the competition seems fierce already!

Trying to get reservations at Armando Al Pantheon: need to book 30 days ahead online and spots disappear immediately. Crazy (and probably not worth the angst).

Suggestions for restaurants in Rome that take online reservations? I don’t really care what part of town but an area that’s nice to walk in before or after dinner would be ideal.
