As somebody who grew up in one of those conservative small towns, I’m mostly concerned with the way you are trying to present them.

You are WAY off and you are setting these kids up with wild, untrue stereotypes. Everything you are accusing these unnamed small-town people of are things that you can find right here in the DMV.

The kids (if they exist and this isn’t a troll post) will likely find out that differing views exist, and that many people are able to coexist with people they don’t necessarily align with.

It happens all over the country.

Your college-bound kid already knows what their values are, and they might not be your values. You are at least self-aware enough to realize that you live in a bubble, which is a good start. Now take a deep breath and land the helicopter and let your child figure out how to be a person in the world with their own values.

People tend to adopt the values of those they're surrounded with. Why else do you think parents are concerned about the crowd their kid is hanging out with?

We don't tend to question things like whether it's okay to call your neighbor's child a homophobic slur in places like DC. Instead, we are shocked by this and have a conversation with the kid's parents if something like this happens.

I know that I have to discuss things that the cousins say and do with my own DC in advance of visits back home to the Red state where I grew up. I don't want my kid coming back from a vacation using antisemitic slurs or using race terms that aren't acceptable back here in DC.

I actually think all you can say, is you're going to meet a lot of people who have had very different backgrounds than you. I happen to think this is good for everyone. That's part of college. They will have to figure out how to navigate their social, academic, and professional lives themselves. Let them know you're available to support them in any way they need support.

that said, I think where a lot of kids end up struggling is with freedom of speech. If you want to do a deep dive into a topic, this would be the one. Why are many forms of hurtful speech constitutionally protected. What does that mean (hint mostly it restricts the government's ability to regulate speech, it doesn't mean anyone is free to say whatever they want in any setting and suffer no consequence). Given the constitutional protection, what are the best strategies for responding to speech you find hurtful to yourself or others? Ignore it so as not to draw more attention to it? Counter protest? Shame the speaker you disagree with? Shout down the speech you disagree with. Look at what recently happened at Stanford law shcool. Note that if your kid is headed to a public school, it's a government entity and the constitutional protections afforded to speech of many kinds will quite strong.

What kind of values are they if you only have them when socially accepted? Tell these kids to learn what they really believe.
