I feel like the destroying but not stealing packages is just a part of porch theft - they open the box, sometimes even very near the house, and realize it's some cheap bit of random Amazonia and just drop it wherever they are. I have heard about people digging up / stealing plants and flowers since I moved out of an apartment - I agree that it's very strange but not necessarily new behavior.

Hm not the answer I expected. In some of the more dense areas that have seen a bigger uptick in crime and mentally ill homeless people hanging around, I could see this, but not upper NW. I am in Brightwood/Manor Park and this isn't happening. We don't even have much package theft.

I’m in the NE and I’ve been hearing about plants being uprooted or otherwise damaged in the neighborhood. It’s been chalked up to mental illness, drugs, and teenagers.

Makes sense. I admit I don’t think about how many people are using drugs in DC.
