Yikes, agree! My kids play baseball and softball and good bats are $400-$500 but they are warrantied so even if you break one, you get a replacement.


Hockey sticks are warranted for 30-days. Always hoping it breaks on day 28, but its usually on day 31! The worst is sticks you buy in advance and then don't use for 6 weeks and then break right away.

Which sport is that?


My kid was playing Tier 1 ice hockey. Club fees ranged from $6000 when we started up to about $7200 when we finished (he played for 7 years). This didn't include equipment/club required gear or travel costs. Club gear ranged from $400-$1000 per year, depending on exactly what you bought. Equipment got a lot more expensive as the kids got older and needed better equipment and adult sized equipment. For example, skates started at $350 a pair when he started in 6th grade, and ended up over $900 by the time he was done as a senior. Sticks were anywhere from $200-$300 each, and as a 16U/18U player he would through 7-10 sticks a year. Travel costs were substantial, as we were on the road for 10-15 weekends a year (including spring tournaments).

So let's see I have kids that play AAU basketball, travel volleyball and travel lax.

AAU Basketball is the cheapest in the sense of club fees - $1200 plus uniform of about $200. Only had 2 overnight trips so that was only about another $1600. plus another 200-300 in tournament entrance fees.

Travel lax - depends on the club (because I have 2 sons playing for 2 different clubs) fees range between the 2 are $2800 to $4200. Uniform another 200 - 500 or so with one requiring a helmet purchase. For one son, we've probably spent another $10K in travel for his team last year because he plays for a high level team plus another about 2000 to play on national teams. The other son less but still in the 3-4K range on hotels, food, etc.

Volleyball - club fees were $5000 and then another 6-7K in travel. plus 300 to 400 in tournament entrance fees.

So all in probably 25K.


So I am this poster and want to state that the travel fees are all in costs. The locations of the events are generally at pretty cool locations and we have made them family vacations so those costs are not just child and parent going just for the tournament but family going to 2-3 day tournament in Florida and then staying 3 or so days to enjoy the weather.

Lots of cost, there is always something to buy for travel, or practice, equipment, the fees are not bad, but going to Dick's sporting good every week to spend hundreds add up fast...That's just how I feel.

Lacrosse (girls) fees to organization are around $3k. Does not include overnights in hotels during tournament season (about 5-6 per year).

Volleyball- high school age, upper level is between $7000-$10000. Club fees are generally $5000-6000. The extra is hotel for multi day tournaments, usually at least 5 of those. Also- plane tickets for a few far away tournaments. Less competitive clubs are more like $3500-$5000.

Travel is the cost of gas. Hotel is at most $200 a night, usually less and most players don't do private instruction. This is for the middle school age of an eybl club. If they make the eybl club, then the team is free, but there is more travel part of which is subsidized. If they make a lower level team high school, nothing changes in terms of cost except they play one exposure tournament that requires you to fly.
