Not new, IMO. In both of our extended families, not abnormal in the <30ish crowd, especially among the young men. When you sit and think about it, I suppose it is lame in many cases, but why do you care about this?

I have no desire to go to your 60th birthday party, Aunt Larla. If I have to bring my own gift, I won’t be in attendance.

We factor the number of people in our party into our gift amount and all sign the gift card.

In our family you're considered okay on your parents' present until you've moved out (after college).

Gauche to pay attention to what gifts other people are bringing, OP.

Are they separately invited or on one "family" invite? Sounds like all on one if the parents RSVP. One family = 1 gift.

Recently I’ve noticed at family baby & bridal showers, weddings, milestone birthdays 25+ year old adult children being RVSP’ed by their parents, thinking their parents’ gift counts as theirs etc. This comes across as very immature, FYI!
